The sight of hungover sunday league subs donning the same onesies as the pros you's see on Football Italia gave me a buzz. You occasionally catch sight within a product heavy advert in your latest issue of Shoot!, Match or World Soccer but these were the days before Amazon & megastores, you could yearn for something for years & still never get your hands on it (same story with the Mr Frosty).
Sean Bean is kept toastie warm in one during the movie When Saturday Comes & I can only imagine they were phased out when substitutes got too comfortable & were less inclined to unzip & exit the suit to enter the game. Named the Apollo Thermal Suit due to the similarities to an astronauts uniform these were quite the luxury item retailing at £99.99 in 1995.
With dual zips running from the neck all the way to your ankles, these suits were designed for the quick sub in colder temps & possibly the haftime kickaround with the other frustrated subs. Training in these would be some feat given the roomy nature but I can definitely picture some frozen South American import in the early days of the Premier League becoming attached to them!
